Boston, the capital of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, is the largest city in New England. It is considered the unofficial economic and cultural center of the entire New England region. The city of Boston lies at the center of America's 11th largest metropolitan area, home to more than 5.8 million people. Boston attracts more than 16.3 million visitors every year.

Boston was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by Puritan colonists from England. During the American Revolution, Boston was the location of several major events, including the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. The Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston occured in the city and surrounding areas.

Boston is home to America's first public school, Boston Latin School (1635) and neighboring Cambridge, MA is home to the first college, Harvard College (1636). Boston is also home to the first American subway system, now managed by the MBTA.
