About The Upper Peninsula (known throughout Michigan and in surrounding areas as "the U.P.") is a region of Michigan. It is not connected (except by a bridge) to the rest of the state, but is connected at its southwestern end to Wisconsin. Therefore, in general the Upper Peninsula is located much closer to Ontario, Canada and the neigboring state of Wisconsin than to the Lower Pensinsula, separated only by the channel connecting Lakes Superior and Huron. This gives the region a distinct syle and heritage of its own. In a way it shares much more in common with its neighbors in Wisconsin and Canada than to the Southern Penninsula of Michigan.
